Winter Rose

This was a challenging color scheme for me to work with.  I don't know about you but roses can be tricky!
They either seems to just come easy or very difficult depending on the day.  I enjoy them, and this time of year in Arizona they are in bloom.  So I will be busy painting more.
Colors I used:  Permanent rose, cad Yellow pale, transparent brown & red oxide, sap green, phalo turquoise blue, cobalt blue, titanium white.  For the background I mixed Terra Rosa hue with cobalt blue and white.
Hope you have a Happy New Year!

Winter Rest

I painted this because I just had too!  I have an affinity for the quiet in the woods after the snow falls.  Hardly any noise because no one was on the road driving
Hardly anyone went out for a walk like me.  I feel those memories come rushing back to me when I saw this picture on the Internet.  It is such a busy time of year I hope that we all find some rest during the holidays and are refreshed for the new year!
May it be a Joyful time, for you and your families!

Overflowing

Painted this rose that I cut from my garden.
Im very thankful this thanksgiving day for this Dailypaintworks site and all the new friends I have made an aquantance with here online. Some I have been able to have come to my class!   There is much more of course to be thankful for but this is an area of life that has been a surprise!
I am almost completing my second year of dailypainting this December!  I'm thankful for all the encouragement that everyone has given me along the way.
Have a great thanksgiving!

Snow Drops

6"x6" oil on gesso board
I just love painting little flowers like this. I used a reference photo and so it was easy to see the values.  When I painted this I was thinking of how even in the snow these delicate beauties can still survive and grow.  So I have no excuse to not paint when my studio gets chilly this December!  Happy painting.
Hope you enjoy!

Christmas Chickadee

Let's talk birds... This is another little creature I just love!! Growing up in Canada these cuties would hang out on our back porch in the snow.  The black cap chickadee!  Hope you enjoy!

Around the World Blog Hop

So I was asked by Sunny Avocado to join the Blog Hop around the world!  Thank you Sunny!
Sunny Avocado's Blog  You can read her inspiring story and look at here fantastic work by clicking the link.
My Favorites are her Peanut butter sandwiches, birds, and dogs!

What am I working on?
I'm working on painting flowers, and thinking of new and interesting compositions to paint.

How does my work differ from other of its genre?
I'm not sure, maybe one thing I do is try to paint flowers in a more contemporary way?
Why do I create what I do?
I love flowers!! So I create paintings out of a love for and a way of expressing the way they make me feel which is happy!
How does my creating process work?
I setup in my studio real flowers and paint them, or I use photos I take or find.  Sometimes when I'm tired I paint something I love to paint even if I have painted it so many times before I think up new compositions or colors I can try!  I will find someone to tag for the blog around the world soon and update my blog with their links.
Thanks and happy painting!

Surrendered Beauty

I've recently expanded my sales to Etsy!  You can check out my new store.  I feel like its a new adventure trying to figure out how to market your art in the internet!
How did I sell my art in Canada?
I would hang 8-12 paintings in high quality retail locations in Vancouver.  I did very well and by the third year I hardly needed to display in stores I had such a great referral system!  Then I moved!
So here in Scottsdale there was an overwhelming number of ways to sell my art but all were out of the question because they would have divided my time so I would have had to be away from my very young children.  That was not going to work.  So I decided to try selling on DailyPaintworks!  And since day one I have been so happy I did!  It has been such an amazing blessing to be
able to do this.  So I'm very glad for unseen opportunities and new directions.
And I can hardly believe I'm saying this but it's a real online community!:)
Thanks for all your support!

Painting - Playing - Teaching - Headquaters

A little messy, I know but kids are on Fall break and as always I'm painting up a storm!!
Thought you might wan't to have an inside look at my work space.  This is where I paint and teach my classes.  I comfortably fits 3-4 students at a time, which is probably all I would dare teach at a time.  Anyhow, through the window I watch hummingbirds feed on these little orange flowers native shrubery to Arizona.   I feel very fortunate to live and work here in Arizona.  Even though I miss the fall in Vancouver!
Hope you all have a great weekend!

Rose in Budcellatti

My husband surprised me with this Budcellatti silver bud vase!!
I had to paint it right away! It was super challenging but you have to paint
what you love or die trying.  Anyhow,  I will be painting more
but here is my first attempt.
Thanks for reading.  And have fun in your studio today!:)

Radishes

I went to buy a few odds and ends for cooking dinner and came across these beautiful radishes.  I have wanted to paint
Radishes for quite some time now and today it felt it was time!  These are so beautifully colored the variety is what caught my eye.  When you pick your subject you have to be excited or inspired by it in order to paint it.  I hope you have a great Sunday!

Overjoyed

Here are some steps in my process above!
It's not the way I usually go about my work but here it is for this painting.  I will say one thing with bright colored flowers I like to lay the block in on a white ground. That keeps the colors clean especially yellows which get dull and lifeless very quickly!  Anyhow I've been busy just with my job as a mom of 2 little ones so that why I haven't posted lately!  Try do do more soon and please ask questions if you feel so enclined!
Thanks for visiting.  Have a great day!

Starship Enterprise ~ Tall bearded iris

So here is another in the series of Tall bearded irises.  The breeder in 1999 actually named this special iris "Starship Enterprise".  Amazing colors!  Hope you enjoy.

Simple Beauties 12"x12" oil on canvas

Well what can I say, flowers are good medicine.  I just enjoy painting pansies so much I was in no rush to complete this painting.  Each one seems to have a personality of it's own.  I guess I have a overly active imagination, but that's alright it comes in handy when your an artist!  However, I will never be able to watch scary movies or swim across the Atlantic because of that fact.  Oh, well..

Fresh Cut

SOLD

Some days you just have to paint something simple and fun!  It's a classic flower that is to me less structured then say a Pansy, or Iris, but, non the less still full of soul.
I hope you enjoy these!

Peaceful Moments 20" x 20" oil on thick canvas

Painted another in the series of Tulips!  This is a larger piece, more what I always painted before I became addicted to the "Daily" painting.  I forgot how much more challenging this larger format was.
I really enjoyed being able make big loose brush stokes again.
Hope you enjoy!

Harmony

SOLD
Here are a few steps to show how I lay out the tulip painting!  Start by covering the canvas in transparents colors.  Then add white to shape where the tulips are. Then I just keep adding detail.  And then I added the background of Payne's grey to darken the background and pop the tulips out!
Hope this helps a little.  I have got to figure out video so I can add video to my blogs!! If only there was two of me.:)
Hope you had a great weekend.

P.S.
A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.

Latin Lover - Tall bearded iris

SOLD

Well, it's hard to stop myself and take pictures of the steps!! Once I get into the painting past the block in stage I get too focused.  I better set one of those annoying egg timers to buzz me to stop and take another photo!! Oh boy.
I hope this helps someone to see at least how I blocked in the greens and pinks and then went on to add the opaque colors.  And the last step is adding the smallest details.

Playful Pansies

Just love painting pansies!  I felt like these looked very playful, all the different colors and even the way they are in various directions in the jar.  Happy Monday friends!  Hope this is a good week painting and playing at your easel!

Roses Still life painting steps

So next time I'll try to remember to take more pictures if more steps but I hope seeing the process helps a little.  I try to always start with transparent colors.
I move thin to thick with the paint.
I will post more step by step paintings soon.  Have a great day!

Still Life with Tulips

It's Monday.  What can I say it was hard to wake up and get going today.  After getting the kiddos to school I came home to teach a few very nice group how to paint still life.  Everyone always ends up teaching me!  I learn new things and when I teach I find I remind myself of things I may have forgotten in my painting process.  So all in all it was a great time.
Hope you have a good time at your easel.
P.S.
Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do.

Summer Trio

Trader Joe's bounty!  This is a still life I just had to paint.  I went out shopping for ingredients for my Lasange dinner and picked this fruit and these beautiful tulips up.  Look forward to painting the tulips tomorrow.
P.S. "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."

Irises

Painted these the other day.  And I love this expressive flower.
Painted yesterday trying out all the many colors of these gorgeous flowers!

Purple & White Irises

So here are the keys players in this painting!  Certainly wasn't the odorless turpinoid! I'm on vacation in Sedona AZ.
I love using these transparent colors!  Painted directly onto my white gesso surface they have a glow to them that you just can't mix.  So that is my little tip for today.

Summers Friend

I have been thinking of painting a hummingbird for so long it's been driving me crazy!! I love watching them eat and play in my backyard.  They tease each other and chase larger birds!  This little guy makes me happy!  Hopefully I don't sound too crazy actually writing this.
Have a great day!
